Adding a Certification
There are a number of different certifications that may be added after initial certification, and in New Jersey all of these require additional coursework. Note that for any additional certification, the applicant (and not the program) is responsible for submitting the transcripts and application materials to the NJDOE.
Additional Subject Area Certifications
Within STEM, if a teacher already has a certification in one content area, in most cases, adding another entails:
Completing 30-credits in that content area. Many of these may have already been completed for the first content area. For example, a physics major who wishes to add a mathematics certificate may be able to count the mathematics courses already taken. Note however that 12 credits of upper-level coursework are required, and typically these are considered 300-level and higher.
Obtaining a passing score on the Praxis Subject Area.
Submitting an application through the Teachers Certification Information System - Online
Middle School with Subject Matter Specialization: Science in Grades 5–8 or Mathematics in Grades 5–8
These certifications can either be earned alongside initial elementary certification, or obtained as an additional certification for K-6 Elementary or P-12 Subject Area teachers.
See the NJ State requirements for the Mathematics in Grades 5–8 certification (1102).
See the NJ State requirements for the Science in Grades 5–8 certification (1103).
